After starting the game you have to go through some tutorials. Then you have 3 days of protection. Break this protection right away and start raiding. First things to upgrade is your storage i.e. banks to store the money you looted. Then side by side mansion and houses and other buildings. Once you upgrade mansion then check the new buildings available by clicking the right side down-most shop button. As soon as you got enough gold for 3rd builder i.e. 500 gold get it immediately. Dont waste gold on avatars. There's extra gold you can get through crimecoast Easter egg gift. Use it wisely. You can also buy some gold, it will help immensely you to get going.
After reaching lvl3 mansion build club by clicking the shop button and join a mafia. Mafia helps you very much. You would find many mafias in the global chat inviting but try to get into an organized and active mafia. you can check them click on the name who invites or chat and view mafia. If you see that members donate there and watch each other's back then its a good mafia. If you see that, below mafia member's name another name is written in small letters then it means his back is being watched by some other mafia member. By watching back you get reinforcement at the time when someone attacks you. A good mafia will ask you to watch someone's back when you join.
How to watch back ?
you can do it by either click club them mafia or just click your name on the uppermost left side then you can find all the members, you can scroll up and down. Then click the name of the member and select last option "watch their back".
If your back is watched by someone who does not got the same henchmen you have then its mutually beneficial to both of you as both can unlock different units. Ex. if you have inspector jones and other have sgt blackwater, then you unlock copcar and hustler apart from slly and hammer and he unlocks sally.
